Imagining that a beam of laser light is capable of trapping particles as tiny as a millionth or billionth fraction of a meter is an exercise that requires a lot of mental abstraction. The ingenuity and knowledge of researchers from the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) made possible the development of the first optical clamp to carry out this work.
The operation of this equipment was explained in the practical session of the First Advanced Latin American ICTP-IVIC Workshop on Numerical Methods, Instrumentation and Measurement in Fluid Dynamics that was carried out at the IVIC facilities. The academic activity aims to promote the exchange of knowledge in the area of Physics and the strengthening of joint research in this science.
