An American academic works to create an online library of 12 million historical photographs, dating from between 1500 and 1922, royalty free. His name is Kalev Leetaru and he has already uploaded more than two million images to his account on the photography portal Flickr.
The photographs and drawings come, reported from BBC News, from the 600 million pages of books scanned by the Internet Archive organization. Leetaru explains that, until now, book digitization has focused on word and text search and PDF files.
For this reason, this researcher, with a scholarship from Georgetown University and Yahoo, the company that owns Flickr, decided to create his own software for analyzing digitized books.
