Matthew Hewlett and Caleb Turon are 14-year-olds from Winnipeg, Canada. Both have just earned the honorary title of hackers after breaking the security of an ATM of the Bank of Montreal. For this they have not resorted to complicated encryption maneuvers or programs written in unknown languages. They have only read the ATM manual on the Internet.
After studying the user manual well, Hewlett and Turon have not taken long to put the cashier software in administrator mode. To do this, they have simply entered one of the device’s default passwords that were listed in the manual.
Luckily for the bank, both hackers had no criminal intent. They have not stolen a single Canadian dollar, nor have they installed any software to read card codes.
According to the Edmonton Journal, both young men have left a message on the screen that read: “Go away. This ATM has been hacked ”, and then they have notified the employees of the bank office. Bank of Montreal has not made any statements on the matter, and no charges have been brought against the youth.
