This little electrostimulator is specifically designed to make the wearer cry, but it’s not a bad thing at all. It is intended for patients who suffer from a painful condition called dry eye syndrome that causes their tear glands not to secrete enough tears.
In the United States alone, there are more than 20 million people who cannot secrete enough tears to lubricate the eye, a condition that causes all kinds of discomfort and vision problems.
To alleviate these patients, a former Stanford Biodesign program researcher named Michael Ackermann has created the little device you see in the photo. It is an electronic implant that regulates the production of tears by means of completely painless electrical micro-stimuli.
