The company responsible for the manufacture of the Strati – the name given to the vehicle – is Local Motors. As mentioned, among the advantages present in a vehicle manufactured thanks to 3D printing, the speed at which it can be produced stands out.
Most of the vehicle has been printed using a huge 3D printer, which allows the manufacturing speed to be really fast, since it only remains to install the wheels, steering wheel and its electric motor.
In total, they have taken 44 hours to bring the Strati to life. In addition, the number of components required is much lower compared to a traditional vehicle, since only less than 50 parts are needed to build it, compared to the thousands of parts present in a normal car.
By using plastic for its manufacture, they have achieved a vehicle that does not reach 1000 kg and that can reach speeds of about 65 kilometers per hour, in addition to being able to travel almost 200 km on a single charge.
Local Motors expects to market the Strati at a price of around $ 18,000, also offering the possibility of installing a traditional engine.
via They successfully test the first functional vehicle made with a 3D printer.
