Home automation is an area that several companies are trying to address, under the idea that our home should be smarter. The Belkin WeMo is one of the products that has stood out in this area, allowing you to control anything you connect to it from your smartphone.
For example, if you have a lamp plugged into the WeMo socket, you can turn it on or off from anywhere with your phone, via the Internet, or schedule it to turn on or off at a certain time.
Same with a webcam, heating, TV, whatever. The problem is that security researchers detected multiple vulnerabilities that would allow an attacker to control your home networks, and what you have connected to the WeMo.
Researchers at IOActive detected a number of issues that would allow attackers to bypass system security and send malicious firmware updates disguised as legal updates, among other things.
