One of the notable new features of Google’s Pixel 4 is its handy Recorder app. The app transcribes what it is recording in real time. That app has since become available for older Pixels, but unfortunately it’s still Pixel exclusive. Now, however, a modified version of the Google Recorder app is available for more Android phones. The folks at XDA-Developers were able to tweak the latest version of the Google Recorder app, version 1.1.284, which works on more than just Pixel smartphones.

The Recorder app is designed to record meetings, music, conferences, and more. It can recognize and transcribe in real time what you are saying and identify other types of noise, such as music and applause. You can search the recordings for specific words. For example, you can search for “amazing” and receive results that show where that word was spoken in each recording.

Specifically, this modded app works fully on Huawei / Honor devices on Android 9 and 10, Motorola, LG and Nokia devices on Android 9, as well as Samsung and Sony devices on Android 9 or Android 10. Technically, any Android phone that uses a The AOSP-based ROM on Android 9 or 10 shouldn’t have a problem either.

Some devices that can use the app but may have some issues include ASUS devices on Android 9 or 10, Oppo and Realme on Android 9 and OnePlus devices on Android 10. Those devices will record audio, but the transcripts are not visible for whatever reason . The only devices that are apparently not supported, at least so far, are Xiaomi devices on MIUI 10 or 11. In that case, the app just crashes.

Requirements
  1. Android smartphone with Android 9 Pie or Android 10. The app was not built for Android versions earlier than Android 9 Pie.
  2. Android software without significant modifications to the TextView component in the Android framework. It seems that the Google Recorder application is not working properly on certain devices because those devices are running software with modifications in TextView. However, there is no way to know if this app will work on your device without actually testing it, so we went ahead and tested it on several different phones to save you trouble.
It works completely:
  • Google Pixel and Pixel XL with Android 10.

  • Huawei and Honor phones with EMUI 9 (Android 9 Pie) or EMUI 10 (Android 10).
  • LG phones with LG UX 8.0 (Android 9 Pie).
  • Motorola phones with Android 9 Pie.
  • Nokia phones with Android 9 Pie.
  • Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI 1.0 / 1.5 (Android 9 Pie) or One UI 2.0 (Android 10).
  • Sony Xperia phones with Android 9 Pie or Android 10.
  • Any phone running AOSP Android 9 Pie or Android 10 based custom ROM.
It works partially (recording works but transcripts are not visible after saving)
  • ASUS phones with ROG UI 2.0 / ZenUI 6.0 based on Android 9 Pie or Android 10.
  • OPPO and Realme phones run ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie.
  • OnePlus phones with OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10
It does not work
  • Xiaomi phones with MIUI 10 or MIUI 11

For those who want to play it safe and stick with a version of Google Recorder that is actually from Google and unmodified, the version that was leaked prior to the Pixel launch still works on other Android devices. If you want the latest version, head over to XDA-Developers to get the download.
