The list of devices that can be used to spy on us has, as of today, a new and unexpected member: the gyroscope. Researchers from Stanford University and the Israeli security group known as Rafael have developed a method to use the sensor that measures the orientation of our mobile as if it were a microphone.
The discovery, which will be presented at the next Usenix security conference, actually starts from a very simple principle. The gyroscopes of the mobile are capable of measuring vibrations to determine the relative position of the phone. In fact, they are so sensitive that they can also be used to pick up the vibrations produced by sound in the air and translate the frequencies into audible sounds.
via They manage to turn the gyroscope of the mobile into a microphone to spy on.
