A team of scientists from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has taken the first step to ensure that pilots can control their aircraft with their minds. They have developed a technology that translates brain impulses into instructions that can control the movements of an airplane. They have tested it in a simulator with seven people – with varying degrees of aerial experience – and have obtained positive results.
The development of this technology is included in the BrainFlight project, funded by the European Union within its Seventh Framework Program (FP7). It consists of a helmet full of electrodes capable of measuring the bioelectric activity of the brain, and algorithms that are capable of transforming them into flight instructions.
