They create bacteria that produce renewable fuel

September 2, 2014

A British research project has succeeded in developing a process that turns a colony of bacteria into propane shedders.

This gas, which is normally extracted from the refining of petroleum and natural gas, is already a fuel with all kinds of applications: from camping stoves to automobiles.

The scientists responsible for the work, from Imperial College London, have found a way to alter the way in which E. Coli bacteria reproduce. And that, instead of forming cell membranes, the fatty acids that were to form them end up transformed into propane.
