For 28 years, the World Mobile Fair has been held, the setting chosen by companies that develop products and communication technologies for the mobile industry to show their news every year.
Its organizer is the GSMA, the world association of telecommunications companies, which brings together some 800 operators from all over the world and some 250 different companies.
The event in Barcelona, Spain, was attended by about 90,000 people from 200 countries. The trade show is made up of 1,800 exhibitors located in a space of 98,000 square meters.
The event also has a strong academic agenda, characterized by keynote conferences by important industry leaders, world leaders and thinkers, who present their views and opinions on the future of telecommunications.
This year the development of next-generation networks, such as 4.5G and 5G, as well as mobile payments have been some of the most important topics. About 4,500 presidents and directors of multinational companies are present during the event. And more than 4,000 journalists gather to broadcast all their news from the event for more than 90 countries.
During the four days that the fair lasts, 12,000 temporary employees are hired and 18 tons of food are consumed. More than 900 networks and WiFi internet access points are activated at the Barcelona fairgrounds, a city that is estimated to receive around 400 million euros thanks to the Mobile World Congress.
The King of Spain, Felipe VI, was in charge of inaugurating the event. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, was one of the special guests.
