After nine consecutive quarters of explosive growth, which propelled the country to the world’s top smartphone sales, the Chinese smartphone market experienced its first recession in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to IDC.
Smartphone sales in China fell to 90.8 million units between October and December, down from 94.8 million in the third quarter, a drop of 4.3%.
“The world has increasingly looked to China as the hub for global smartphone growth, and this is the first setback we have seen on a stellar growth path,” said Melissa Chau, research manager at IDC.
Chau does not believe, however, that this is the start of a consecutive series of declines.
