Doctors Mark Li-cheng Wu and John Paul Graff published a paper with very accurate photographs of spirochetes, bacteria that cause diarrhea and that were found in the intestine of a patient.
“The diagnosis of the case is very difficult due to the size of the bacteria,” they explained in the Nokia Blog, “but we were able to take a photo with the Lumia 1020 and then make a very significant zoom that allowed us to identify the bacteria and apply the treatment suitable”.
The image taken was of such quality that, after an improvement process, it was possible to identify “subtle characteristics such as the shape, size and color of the cells”, in addition to the detection of small parasitic infections.
Doctors argue for various reasons for using the 1020 beyond the “exuberant number of camera pixels.” One of those reasons was image stabilization, which allowed them to take “freehand” images through the microscope lens. They also mentioned the size of the pixels in the sensor, which allowed close-ups without loss of quality that are very useful “in the world of microscopes.”
