2014 has been a year… peculiar, so to speak, within the history of videogames. A year where the indies have made it clear once and for all that they are here to stay and that they can compete in quality, without hesitation, with the giants of the industry. It was the year Minecraft was sold to Microsoft.
But it was also the year where the 3 games with the highest marks on Metacritic were either remasters or remakes of other titles (Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us and Super Smash Bros) and in which some mobile games, such as Monument Valley, have set new standards in the industry. When it came to choosing our best video games of 2014, we decided to make a list that reflected all those changes. It is this:
