The Guardians of Peace continue the harassment of Sony Pictures, which faces millions in losses following the cancellation of The Interview. Last Tuesday, the hackers sent a new statement in which they extended their threats to the cinemas where The Interview was scheduled to premiere.
The threatening tone of their messages takes on a new level when they refer to the September 11 attacks, hinting that the situation could repeat itself and even advising citizens who live near one of those movie theaters to leave their homes.
The Department of Homeland Security of the United States has been analyzing the threats and assures that there is no indication that an attack is being planned. However, the main cinema chains in the country withdrew The Interview from their billboards after the statement was released. At first, Sony canceled the preview in New York, but they have finally given in to the pressure of the cinemas and have definitively canceled the plans to release the film.
A Sony Pictures spokesperson confirmed hours later that the company has no future plans to release the film, either in theaters or on online platforms.
