For more than 20 years, any form of official identification for Somali citizens was found irregularly in the alleys of the Bakara market.
Without a government and institutions to function during the two decades of civil war, many Somalis had to acquire false identity documents and passports to travel to neighboring countries as refugees.
Now the country has a functional government, with institutions working to protect Somalia’s identity.
