The main idea of the project will be to create 7,000 access points that provide free connection limited to a distance of up to 25 meters. The financing of this network will be done through advertising that people who try to connect to it will receive.
The City Council, however, found that the booths are more important than they appear during Hurricane Sandy, as they were the only telephones left in operation as they did not need additional electricity to operate. Therefore, the WiFi points will maintain a conventional voice line for exclusive use to call emergencies.
