The New York authorities have announced their plans to build a municipal free WiFi network that will cover the entire city and which will be, according to those responsible, the largest and fastest of its kind in the world.
LinkNYC is the name of this new network, which will spread through 10,000 connection points distributed by the five major districts of the city and will offer a connection of one giga per second to a radius of 150 feet, as well as free voice calls to the 50 states of the United States, reports the Recode website. The first of these kiosks will start operating at the end of 2015.
The kiosks will be of two types: the first, which will be located in the busiest areas, will have a large digital screen on which announcements will be displayed, as well as public service or emergency information, if necessary. These will be the largest, similar in size and appearance to the advertising canopies that already exist in many cities. Smaller ones will also be installed in residential areas, similar to a parking meter and without advertising.
