When we share our location on WhatsApp, the smartphone determines our location through Google Maps. It extracts the coordinates and a thumbnail from Google Maps and sends them through WhatsApp.
What we now know is that this thumbnail is downloaded from Google’s servers without encryption, so that any user could intercept our location and know where we are, at least according to Google’s plan.
From WhatsApp they have confirmed that this security error and that it is already fixed in the beta version. However, the official version available on Google Play is still not corrected, although it is expected that they will do so in the next update.
