The rocket is known simply as the Space Launch System or SLS. It is a new category of large tonnage launch vehicles specifically designed for exploration missions beyond Mars.
The first version of this heavy rocket will begin construction in February 2015 and its first test flight will not take place until November or December of the same year.
On this first flight, the SLS will put into orbit an Orion capsule with an estimated total payload of 77 tons. However, NASA explains that subsequent versions of the rocket will be capable of powering up to 143 tons. The next step is to coordinate all the elements of the Orion project, of this new rocket, and to adapt the launch facilities. If everything goes fine. We will see the SLS in action next year.
