68% year-on-year so far in 2014 (until June), according to data from the new report presented by the consulting firm Challenger, Greay & Christmas.
The losses are on track to be the largest since 2009, the year in which the cuts reached 174,629 employees in the sector.
In the first half of 2014, a total of 48,402 jobs were lost compared to the 28,883 announced in the first six months of 2013. The current figure does not include Microsoft’s announcement this July of 18,000 layoffs.
The biggest cuts in the industry have been led by IT companies, which announced 30,002 rescissions from January to June. This was 51% more than the 19,930 produced in the same period in 2013.
