Shortly after announcing its financial results for 2013, marked by a turnover of 52.7 billion dollars, almost flat compared to the previous year, and a fall in net profits of 13% (these were about 9.6 billion dollars), Intel announced through a spokesman that it will reduce its workforce by 5% this year, that is, by about 5,000 people.
Not all of these employees will, however, be laid off. Said anonymous spokesman told The New York Times, which has echoed the news, that the workforce reduction will be a mix of job abandonment and layoffs.
