Manuel Fernández, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation and president of Cantv, hopes that the supply of cell phones will return to normal. However, he believes that it is reckless to specify dates.
He assured that, despite the shortage of cell phones and the 34% drop in Vtelca’s production, according to the Vtelca Report and Account (Orinoquia has not published its results), in the first four months of this year Movilnet registered almost the same number of lines than in the same period of 2013. Between April and May the company registered 1.38 million lines, while the previous year the figure was 1.4 million.
Fernández assured that in 2013 Movilnet managed to place 4.4 million equipment on the market, three million of them supplied by the national manufacturers Vtelca and Orinoquia. However, the first only produced 1.34 million terminals in 2013, according to the Report and Account.
Importers estimate that the Venezuelan market demands between eight and 10 million cell phones per year.
Data from Cantv indicate that 30% of mobile phone users (30.8 million users at the end of 2013, according to the National Telecommunications Commission, Conatel) change their phones in a range that oscillates between 12 and 18 months.
via They expect the cell phone supply to return to normal.
