The New York Times and the German magazine Der Spiegel have reported, citing documents leaked by Edward Snowden, that the NSA had monitored the communications of the Chinese company Huawei, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of mobile phones and internet infrastructure.
The newspaper notes that the objective of the NSA operation, codenamed Shotgiant, was to discover the connections between Huawei and the Chinese Army; Although it also tried to monitor through the computer and telephone networks that Huawei sold to other nations.
The NSA had access to the servers at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen and obtained information on the operation of the giant and digital routers, which connect a third of the world’s population, according to the newspaper.
