“We have a typewriter, and it is not electronic.” As a declaration of intent, it sounds almost comical, but it was said by none other than Patrick Sensburg, head of the German National Security Agency. The US NSA’s digital espionage cases are causing agencies in other countries to revert to more traditional methods.

They are not even the first. Russia already acquired 20 typewriters last year for precisely the same purpose. At the moment, the German secret services only have one, but Sensburg has explained that they are considering expanding the number of these venerable relics to write the most confidential reports offline.
