The fear that the US National Security Agency (NSA) is reading everything we send through the Internet tubes has led some countries to take more drastic measures than others. Germany in particular has considered the option of allowing German data to only transit networks within the country, and is now considering working with France to create a European network separate from the United States.
In October of last year, it was discovered that the NSA was monitoring the mobile phone of Angela Merkel.
Hollande would apparently be willing to work with Germany on this issue, and confirmed to agree with the ideas put forward by that country. On the diplomatic front, Germany has also tried to work with the US for an “anti-spying” deal, but to no avail.
