UK health authorities announced today that two people have developed tuberculosis after interacting with cats infected with the disease, the first documented case of a transmission of tuberculosis from cats to humans.
According to England’s Department of Public Health, the transmission occurred after an outbreak of the disease among nine cats who lived relatively closely together. The outbreak was detected by a veterinarian, and authorities say the strain is genetically identical in both infected cats and humans.
