Facebook would be completing the acquisition of the company Titan Aerospace, manufacturers of unmanned aerial vehicles, operated with solar energy. The autonomy of these aircraft is such that they can remain in flight for 5 years, without the need to land. According to sources close to the project, consulted by TechCrunch, the value of the operation would be 60 million dollars.
The publication adds that Facebook would be interested in using drones “to cover regions of the world lacking Internet access, starting with Africa.”
The company itself describes the “Solara 60” model as “atmospheric satellites”, with the capacity to carry out a large part of the operations of an orbital satellite, although for a fraction of the price, and added versatility. Added to the above is the possibility of giving other parallel uses to each system, including climate monitoring, natural disaster assessment, terrestrial mapping or communications.
