China is the most populous country in the world, with more than 1.3 billion inhabitants. The People’s Republic of China is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party and has the seat of its government in the capital, called Peking in Spanish. Currently, the eastern country exclusively uses Beijing to refer to its capital.
The best known tourist attractions are some nearby sections of The Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, the Imperial Palace that was the home of the emperors of China for almost 500 years. It is located in the center of Beijing and from 1925 until now, it houses the Palace Museum. Due to its historical, political and cultural value, Tian’anmen Square is also very visited.
Outside of China this is the square best known for the memory of being the center of the 1989 Tian’anmen Square Protests, a pro-democracy movement that ended with the declaration of martial law in Beijing by the government and the death of hundreds of protesters. In its recent history, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games added to the city the lush and attractive Beijing National Stadium.
The great economic growth of China that has led it to relax its communist schemes. In fact, the country’s leaders are expected to present a reform program for the next decade, something that, according to some experts, will lead to significant economic, political and social changes in the Asian giant.
