Brazil will use PackBot 510 robots during the 2014 World Cup, in order to improve safety. The Brazilian government closed an agreement for USD $ 7.2 million for 30 of these military robots, which will be installed in the 12 cities where the games will be played.
The robots, designed by iRobot (creators of the Roomba vacuum cleaner), are quite versatile and have been used in a wide variety of operations. The first time they were used was in 2002 in Afghanistan, where they worked cleaning bunkers, caves and collapsed buildings. They also crossed minefields. In 2003 they operated in Iraq to search for vehicles. A Packbot was the first to enter the Fukushima nuclear plant after the earthquake in Japan.
