A team of Australian scientists is working on a project that seeks to eliminate space debris that orbits our planet – and that is a danger to our satellites – using a laser beam system installed on Earth.
The project may sound implausible but it is quite real, and it will be worked on for the next ten years, said the director of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University.
The country secured a contract with NASA to track and map space debris with a telescope equipped with an infrared laser at the Mount Stromlo Observatory.
