The idea behind the new format is that it is focused on massive data storage and that it reaches the professional market first, being compatible with future generations of optical discs (not current ones, of course).
The intention of both companies is to launch a first version of Archival Disc in the summer of 2015 with a capacity of 300 GB per disc, being double-sided and three layers per side.
Later the capacity per disk will be increased to 500 GB and finally up to 1 TB and all of them, for now, can be written only once.
