Raytheon military drones move to Linux. The aeronautical company, and one of the main military suppliers when it comes to these vehicles, is abandoning the Solaris operating system to go open source. The first drone to be equipped with a Linux variant will be the Northrop Grumman MQ-8C Fire Scout helicopter.
Raytheon has signed a $ 16 million contract to install Linux on US Navy drone control systems. According to the military provider, the change will make the systems more intuitive, and will facilitate upgrades, saving costs in the long run.
The change has not yet been commented on by Oracle, the company that owns the Solaris operating system. In October 2013, Oracle published a document warning that open source software posed an unacceptable risk from a security point of view. Everything seems to indicate that the US Navy does not think the same.
