Lately there has been an increase in the popularity of the term binge in English (which means “to get drunk on”, that is, to consume something to the point where it is harmful), applied to practices such as reading, playing video games or watching television. In order to disprove what common sense could tell us, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin conducted a study whose results favor common sense.
For research purposes, binge-watching (abusing watching) television is considered watching 3 or more episodes of a series without stopping. The tests were carried out among 316 participants, between 18 and 29 years of age and asked questions focused on the emotional state such as “How often do you feel lonely?” 75% of those surveyed admitted to binge-watching, showing a preference for shows like Orange Is the New Black, Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and Desperate Housewives.
