The accident occurred during the Endure Batavia Triathlon in Geraldton, a city in western Australia about 420 km from Perth. A drone was filming the athletes in full test when it collapsed to a height of about 10 meters. He fell on the athlete Raija Ogden causing injuries to the head. The scene can be seen in the photo above, taken by Browning Media.
Warren Abrams, owner of the company that operated the drone, has stated that someone intentionally interfered with the channels of the device. This interrupted the signal and caused the person operating it to lose control of the equipment.
According to local newspaper The West Australian, Warren had volunteered to film the race with a drone, but did not have the necessary licenses to operate the device at a public event. It remains to be seen if the equipment was really hacked or is it an excuse from the company that operated it. The Australian aviation authority, CASA, is investigating what happened.
