The Home Depot, the North American hardware giant, has confirmed the cyber attack on its servers and has acknowledged that 56 million debit and credit cards have been compromised.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the company has also recognized that, in some cases, the accounts associated with these cards have been emptied.
In addition, fraudulent transactions taking place in the United States are due to criminals using the stolen information to buy prepaid cards, or to make purchases at electronics or grocery stores.
This security breach has potentially affected customers who shopped at any of the company’s nearly 4,000 stores in the United States and Canada between April and September.
