A study, carried out by a group of experts in marine ecosystems from several countries, has tried to estimate this amount of garbage and I have already warned you that the final result is quite dizzying: 5.25 billion. Billions with “b” and ours, that is, according to this report there are 25,000,000,000,000 pieces of plastic in the sea.
To arrive at this figure, the researchers used information obtained from the collection of plastics (with a minimum size of 0.33mm) and visual inspections in 1,571 locations scattered around the world. Later, they combined these data with their own statistical model to calculate their dispersion. As a consequence, they have estimated a minimum of 5.25 trillion plastic particles with a total weight of 268,940 tons.
Via 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic pollute our oceans.
