Security firm ESET today released a technical analysis on Linux / Ebury, an OpenSSH backdoor and credential stealer that the company discovered last month. In the so-called Operation Windigo, 25,000 Linux servers have been infected, redirecting 500,000 visitors to malicious content every day.
Over the past few weeks, thousands of victims have been notified that their servers have been infected. The dissemination of the details of the threat, published today by websites such as TNW, is part of an effort to increase awareness.
The threat runs on an infrastructure hosted entirely on infected computers: 25,000 Linux servers in total over the last two years, of which more than 10,000 are still compromised today.
