Steve Mnuchin, the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, has asked the Ministry of Justice of the country to investigate the power of large technology companies. “These issues need to be carefully reviewed,” Mnuchin said when asked by reporters about the broadcast of a television special report on CBS’s “60 Minutes” program on the power of Google.

“These are issues that the Ministry of Justice must review seriously, not just one company, but all these technology companies that have an ever-increasing impact on the economy.” Although the Justice Department does not fall under Mnuchin’s tutelage, his words carry special weight because of his close relationship with President Donald Trump.

But he is not the only senior government official who has openly commented on the matter. Makan Delrahim, head of the Justice Department’s own competition department, at a conference in Chicago last month made clear that the administration’s position is one of aggressive vigilance. “In certain markets for platforms with network effects, there may be barriers to entry or a tendency for a company to establish itself as the sole winner.” “Competition considerations should focus on observing if the market suffers and consumers are being left without receiving innovations as a result of the actions of a monopolistic established actor.”
